For more than 30 years, Cuba has been transforming its agrifood system, resulting in a global reference for agroecology scientists, farmers and activists. Despite their success, Cuba faces chronic challenges meeting the population's food needs.
Cuba’s agrifood system has often been described in starkly different ways. Some portray it as a global example of organic, food-sovereign farming, while others dismiss it as underdeveloped and in need of modernization. The reality lies somewhere in between: a complex system shaped by innovation, resilience, and ongoing challenges.
Our Agroecology, Our Future explores these nuances, as well as the unleashed potential of agroecology, through the voices of farmers and specialists. These leaders make the case for why agroecology is the path for Cuba to achieve true food security and food sovereignty. As the country’s economic crisis deepens, resources become scarce and prices of imported goods increase, agroecology in Cuba is now more important than ever.
