The Caribbean Agroecology Institute (CAI) is a regional organization dedicated to advancing just, sustainable agri-food systems rooted in agroecology, food sovereignty, climate resilience, and community self-determination. We work to address interconnected socio-ecological crises by supporting community-led processes and strengthening the diversity of grassroots movements working to repair our relationships with nature and each other. CAI emphasizes that meaningful transformation requires changes in governance, economics, and culture, not just technology.
Over decades, CAI has built deep, broad, and trusted partnerships with farmers, researchers, NGOs, policymakers, and social entrepreneurs across Cuba and the wider Caribbean. Cuba remains a central focus of our work due to its long history of agroecological innovation and continued repository of solutions for the region. Today this work is more urgent than ever given the economic crisis and risk of losing the gains made over the past 3 decades.
CAI also recognizes the importance of bridging Cuba with the region and is working to strengthen a Caribbean agroecology network. Our work is rooted in participatory approaches where through trusted partnerships we resource local initiatives, accompany social processes, and amplify voices from the region.
